The immediate family
الأُسْرَةُ الصَّغِيرَةNotice the pattern: the feminine word is usually the masculine word plus ة.
| Male | English | Female | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| أَب / وَالِد | father | أُمّ / وَالِدَة | mother |
| ابْن | son | ابْنَة / بِنْت | daughter |
| أَخ | brother | أُخْت | sister |
| زَوْج | husband | زَوْجَة | wife |
| طِفْل | child (boy) | طِفْلَة | child (girl) |
| رَجُل | man | امْرَأَة | woman |
| وَلَد | boy | بِنْت | girl |
Words for the whole group
| Arabic | English | Arabic | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| أُسْرَة / عَائِلَة | family | وَالِدَان | parents |
| إِخْوَة | brothers | أَخَوَات | sisters |
| أَوْلَاد | children, boys | بَنَات | girls |
Two of anything — the dual
Family words are where the dual appears most. Arabic never says two brothers with a number word — it changes the noun itself by adding ـَانِ.
Two words for father and mother
أَب and أُمّ are the everyday words. وَالِد and وَالِدَة are more formal and polite — you will see them in writing and hear them in careful speech. Both are correct.
The extended family
الأَقَارِب| Male | English | Female | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| جَدّ | grandfather | جَدَّة | grandmother |
| عَمّ | uncle (father's brother) | عَمَّة | aunt (father's sister) |
| خَال | uncle (mother's brother) | خَالَة | aunt (mother's sister) |
| ابْنُ العَمِّ | cousin (m., father's side) | ابْنَةُ العَمِّ | cousin (f., father's side) |
| ابْنُ الخَالِ | cousin (m., mother's side) | ابْنَةُ الخَالِ | cousin (f., mother's side) |
| حَفِيد | grandson | حَفِيدَة | granddaughter |
| جَار | neighbour | جَارَة | neighbour (f.) |
| صَدِيق | friend | صَدِيقَة | friend (f.) |
The biggest difference from English
English says uncle for both sides of the family. Arabic never does — you must know whose brother he is.
The same rule applies to aunts: عَمَّة is your father's sister, خَالَة is your mother's sister.
A friendly note
In Arab culture خَالَة and عَمّ are also used politely for older people who are not relatives — like saying auntie or uncle to a family friend.
A family tree
شَجَرَةُ العَائِلَةRead the tree aloud
Point at each box and say the sentence. Then replace the word with your own family.
My family, your family
الأُسْرَةُ مَعَ الضَّمَائِرTake any family word and add the endings you learned in Grammar 2.
| Ending | English | أُخْت — sister | عَائِلَة — family | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ـِي | my | أُخْتِي | عَائِلَتِي | my sister / my family |
| ـكَ | your (m.) | أُخْتُكَ | عَائِلَتُكَ | your sister / family |
| ـكِ | your (f.) | أُخْتُكِ | عَائِلَتُكِ | your sister / family |
| ـهُ | his | أُخْتُهُ | عَائِلَتُهُ | his sister / family |
| ـهَا | her | أُخْتُهَا | عَائِلَتُهَا | her sister / family |
| ـهُمَا | their (the two) | أُخْتُهُمَا | عَائِلَتُهُمَا | the sister / family of the two |
| ـنَا | our | أُخْتُنَا | عَائِلَتُنَا | our sister / family |
| ـهُمْ | their | أُخْتُهُمْ | عَائِلَتُهُمْ | their sister / family |
Two special words: أَب and أَخ
These two behave differently. With my they lose the vowel; with the other endings a long و appears:
Remember the ة rule
Words ending in ة change it to ت before the ending:
Family verbs: past and present
أَفْعَالُ الأُسْرَةArabic verbs are listed in the he form, not with to. So أَحَبَّ literally means he loved, and يُحِبُّ means he loves.

| سَاعَدَ | يُسَاعِدُ | to help | أُسَاعِدُ أَبِي. |
| زَارَ | يَزُورُ | to visit | نَزُورُ جَدَّتِي. |
| عَاشَ | يَعِيشُ | to live | نَعِيشُ مَعًا. |
| عَمِلَ | يَعْمَلُ | to work | أَبِي يَعْمَلُ. |
| تَكَلَّمَ | يَتَكَلَّمُ | to speak, to talk | نَتَكَلَّمُ كَثِيرًا. |
One verb, all the pronouns
تَصْرِيفُ الفِعْلHere is سَاعَدَ / يُسَاعِدُ (to help) with every pronoun. Learn this pattern and you can use most of the verbs above.
| Pronoun | Past | Present | Meaning (present) |
|---|---|---|---|
| أَنَا | سَاعَدْتُ | أُسَاعِدُ | I help |
| أَنْتَ | سَاعَدْتَ | تُسَاعِدُ | you help (m.) |
| أَنْتِ | سَاعَدْتِ | تُسَاعِدِينَ | you help (f.) |
| هُوَ | سَاعَدَ | يُسَاعِدُ | he helps |
| هِيَ | سَاعَدَتْ | تُسَاعِدُ | she helps |
| أَنْتُمَا | سَاعَدْتُمَا | تُسَاعِدَانِ | you two help |
| هُمَا | سَاعَدَا | يُسَاعِدَانِ | the two of them help |
| نَحْنُ | سَاعَدْنَا | نُسَاعِدُ | we help |
| أَنْتُمْ | سَاعَدْتُمْ | تُسَاعِدُونَ | you help (pl.) |
| هُمْ | سَاعَدُوا | يُسَاعِدُونَ | they help |
The past tense — the ending tells you who
You do not always need the pronoun. Look at the last letters of the verb:
The present tense — the first letter tells you who
Exactly as in Grammar 2: أَ = I, نَ = we, يَ = he or they, تَ = you or she.
