The view of the majority of scholars (al-jumhūr).

    The gold bar

Where the Ḥanafī school holds a different ruling, a gold bar appears. Press it to show the Ḥanafī ruling.

Every hadith in this lesson is authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) — all are from Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, with the hadith number beneath it. Qurʾān verses are in the Uthmānī script of the Muṣḥaf.

    • Minor and major
    • Why it matters
Part 1 · Two kinds of ḥadath

    What is hadath?

الحدث (ḥadath) is a state that a person is in — not dirt you can see. It stops you from praying until you remove it, and it is removed only by الوضوء (wuḍūʾ) or الغسل (ghusl). Perfume and clean clothes do not remove it.

Purity from ḥadath

Making yourself ready for prayer with wuḍūʾ or ghusl. This lesson.

Purity from najāsah

Washing away impure things — like urine or blood — from the body, clothes and place of prayer. A separate lesson.

Example: a spot of mud on your sleeve does not break your wuḍūʾ. And smelling clean after a shower does not by itself mean you have wuḍūʾ — that is a different question.

    What breaks wudu

    • The main nullifiers
    • Sleep
    • Certainty and doubt
    • The Ḥanafī view
Part 2 · What breaks wuḍūʾ

    The main nullifiers

1 · What leaves the two exits

    Urine, stool and wind.

2 · Losing awareness

Deep sleep, fainting, being put under anaesthesia, or being intoxicated.

3 · Touching the private part

Touching one’s own private part directly with the palm of the hand, with nothing in between.

Careful: not everything that leaves the body has the same ruling. Maniyy requires ghusl, not just wuḍūʾ — this is explained in Part 5.

Part 2 · What breaks wuḍūʾ

    What about sleep?

    Hadith
“The Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would sleep, then pray, without making wuḍūʾ.”

The scholars explain that this was a light sleep while sitting firmly, waiting for the prayer. So:

    Wuḍūʾ stays

Nodding off for a moment while sitting in class or in the masjid.

    Wuḍūʾ breaks

A deep sleep in which you lose awareness — especially lying down.

Part 2 · What breaks wuḍūʾ

    Certainty beats doubt

A man complained to the Prophet ﷺ that during prayer he sometimes imagines his wuḍūʾ has broken. He ﷺ said:

    Hadith
“He should not leave the prayer unless he hears a sound or notices a smell.”
A principle of fiqh: what you are sure of is not removed by a doubt.

In practice: if you are sure you made wuḍūʾ and only wonder whether it broke, you still have wuḍūʾ.

Part 2 · What breaks wuḍūʾ

    The Hanafi view

    The Ḥanafī view

    Also break wuḍūʾ:

    • Blood or pus that flows beyond the place of a wound.
    • Vomiting a mouthful.
    • Laughing out loud during a prayer that has rukūʿ and sujūd.

    Do not break wuḍūʾ:

    • Touching one’s own private part.
    • Touching the skin of a person of the opposite sex.

On these last two, most other scholars hold that wuḍūʾ is broken: the Shāfiʿīs by any touch of the opposite sex, the Mālikīs and Ḥanbalīs when the touch is with desire.

The armsFrom the fingertips up to and including the elbows.
The headWiped with wet hands, not washed.
The feetUp to and including the ankle bones — and between the toes.
    Part 3 · Wuḍūʾ

    Intention, order and continuity

Intention

A decision in the heart to make wuḍūʾ. It is not said out loud.

Order

Face, then arms, then head, then feet — the order of the verse.

Continuity

Washing each part before the one before it has dried.

Intention is required by the majority. Order and continuity are obligatory in some schools and Sunnah in others — so keep to all three.

    Hadith
    “Actions are only by intentions.”
    The Ḥanafī view

Only the four acts in the verse are obligatory. Intention, order and continuity are سنة — the wuḍūʾ is valid without them, but the full reward needs the intention. Wiping a quarter of the head fulfils the obligation.

    Part 3 · Wuḍūʾ · Steps 1–4

    Wudu step by step

This is the Prophet’s ﷺ wuḍūʾ as ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān رضي الله عنه showed it — al-Bukhārī (159) and Muslim (226).

    1. Intend, and say “Bismillāh”The intention is in the heart.
    2. Wash both hands to the wrists — three times
    3. Rinse the mouth and the nose — three timesDraw water into the nose, then blow it out. Gently if you are fasting.
    4. Wash the face — three timesOnce covers the obligation; three times is the Sunnah.
    Part 3 · Wuḍūʾ · Steps 5–8

    Wudu step by step

    1. Wash the right arm to the elbow, then the left — three times eachPush the sleeve back past the elbow.
    2. Wipe the head once, then the earsWet hands from the front of the head to the back and return; then the ears.
    3. Wash the right foot to the ankle, then the left — three times eachRun a finger between the toes.
    4. End with the duʿāʾ«أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ»Muslim (234)
    Part 3 · Wuḍūʾ

    The reward of wudu

    Hadith
“Whoever makes wuḍūʾ like this wuḍūʾ of mine, then prays two rakʿahs without letting his mind wander, his past sins are forgiven.”

And the duʿāʾ after wuḍūʾ: the Prophet ﷺ said that whoever makes a complete wuḍūʾ and then says it, the eight gates of Paradise are opened for him, and he may enter by whichever he wishes — Muslim (234), from ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb

    Part 3 · Wuḍūʾ

    Water must reach the skin

Anything that forms a layer water cannot pass through must be removed before wuḍūʾ. This is called a حائل (barrier).

    Must be removed

Nail polish · paint · glue · anything waterproof that sits on the skin or nails.

    Not a barrier

Henna (it is a colour, not a layer) · ink stains · lotion that has soaked into the skin.

Three times is the Sunnah — not more. Washing more than three times, or wasting water, is disliked.

    • The conditions
    • How long?
    • What about socks?
Part 4 · Wiping over khuffs

    An ease from Allah

A خف (khuff) is a leather sock or boot that covers the ankle. Instead of washing the feet in wuḍūʾ, you may wipe once over the top of the khuffs with wet hands. This was reported from the Prophet ﷺ by a great number of Companions.

    1. Put them on after a complete wuḍūʾBoth feet must already be washed when you put them on.
    2. They must cover the anklesAnd you must be able to walk in them.
    3. Only for wuḍūʾFor ghusl, the khuffs come off and the feet are washed.
Part 4 · Wiping over khuffs

    How long?

    Hadith
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set three days and nights for the traveller, and one day and night for the resident.”

    At home

24 hours — one day and one night.

    Travelling

72 hours — three days and nights.

When does the time start? According to most scholars, including the Ḥanafīs, it starts from the first time your wuḍūʾ breaks after putting them on — not from the moment you put them on.

Part 4 · Wiping over khuffs

    What about ordinary socks?

    The Ḥanafī view

Wiping is allowed over leather khuffs, and over socks only if they are thick:

    • you could walk a distance in them without shoes,
    • they stay up on their own without being tied, and
    • water does not soak straight through them.

Ordinary thin cotton or nylon socks do not qualify in the Ḥanafī school — the feet must be washed.

Tip: a student who follows the Ḥanafī school and wants this ease at school can wear leather khuffs.

    • Three fluids
    • ʿAlī’s question
    • The causes of ghusl
    • Umm Sulaym’s question
    • On waking up
Part 5 · When ghusl is required

    Not every fluid means ghusl

The scholars of fiqh distinguish three fluids. Only the first requires ghusl.

    FluidIn shortWhat it requires
المنيManiyy (semen)Thick. It is what a wet dream brings.Ghusl
المذيMadhyThin and clear.Wash the spot, then wuḍūʾ
الوديWadyComes after urinating.Wash the spot, then wuḍūʾ
Part 5 · When ghusl is required

    Ali’s question

    Hadith
ʿAlī said: “I often had madhy, and I felt shy to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so I asked al-Miqdād ibn al-Aswad, and he asked him. He said: ‘It requires wuḍūʾ.’”

The lesson: feeling shy is natural and good. But ʿAlī رضي الله عنه did not let shyness stop him from learning his religion — he found a way to ask.

Part 5 · When ghusl is required

    Ghusl becomes obligatory for…

    1. Discharge of maniyy with desireAsleep or awake. The most familiar case is a wet dream (الاحتلام): a normal sign of puberty (البلوغ), not a sin. It applies to boys and girls alike.
    2. The end of menses
    3. The end of post-natal bleeding
    4. Marital relations الجماعFor married adults — listed so the list is complete.
    5. DeathThe body of a Muslim is washed by the community.
    Qurʾān
“And if you are in a state of janābah, then purify yourselves.”
Part 5 · When ghusl is required

    Umm Sulaym’s question

Umm Sulaym رضي الله عنها came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked:

    Hadith
“O Messenger of Allah, Allah is not shy of the truth — must a woman make ghusl if she has a wet dream?” He said: “If she sees the fluid.”

Notice: she began with “Allah is not shy of the truth.” Asking about the rulings of your religion is never something to be embarrassed about.

Part 5 · When ghusl is required

    Two cases to remember

    A dream, but nothing found

    No ghusl is required.

Something found, but no memory of a dream

    Ghusl is required.

The ruling follows what you find — not what you remember.

If maniyy comes out without desire — because of illness, for example — most scholars say only wuḍūʾ is required. The Shāfiʿīs require ghusl in this case too.

Part 6 · How to make ghusl

    The minimum and the complete

    The minimum

The intention, and water reaching every part of the body — including the scalp and the roots of the hair.

    The complete ghusl

The way the Prophet ﷺ made ghusl, as ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها described it below.

    Hadith
“When he made ghusl from janābah, he began by washing his hands, then made wuḍūʾ as he would for prayer, then put his fingers in the water and ran them through the roots of his hair, then poured three handfuls over his head, then poured water over his whole body.”
Part 6 · How to make ghusl

    Ghusl step by step

    1. Intend to remove the major ḥadath, and say “Bismillāh”
    2. Wash the hands, and wash away any impurity on the body
    3. Make a complete wuḍūʾThe feet may be left until the end.
    4. Pour water over the head three timesRun the fingers through the hair so the water reaches the scalp.
    5. Pour water over the whole body — the right side first, then the leftMake sure it reaches behind the ears, under the arms, the navel and every fold of skin.
Part 6 · How to make ghusl

    Useful notes

    Ghusl includes wuḍūʾ

After ghusl you may pray without a new wuḍūʾ — unless something broke your wuḍūʾ during the ghusl.

    Braided hair

A woman does not have to undo her braids for the ghusl of janābah, as long as water reaches the roots of the hair.

    Hadith
The Prophet ﷺ said to Umm Salamah about her braids: “It is enough for you to pour three handfuls of water over your head.”
    The Ḥanafī view

Rinsing the mouth and the nose are obligatory parts of ghusl, because they are part of “the whole body.” A ghusl without them is not valid.

    7
    Part seven

    Menses and post-natal bleeding

    • A decree of Allah
    • Prayer and fasting
    • Other rulings
    Part 7 · Menses and post-natal bleeding

    Something Allah decreed

ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها got her period on the way to Ḥajj and began to cry. The Prophet ﷺ comforted her:

    Hadith
“This is something Allah has decreed for the daughters of Ādam. So do everything the pilgrim does, except that you do not make ṭawāf around the House.”

So: menses is not a punishment and not a sign of weak faith. Following its rulings is itself obedience to Allah, and she is rewarded for it.

    Part 7 · Menses and post-natal bleeding

    Prayer and fasting

    Hadith
“When the period comes, leave the prayer; and when it ends, wash the blood from yourself and pray.”
    Hadith
ʿĀʾishah said: “That used to happen to us, and we were told to make up the fasts, but not told to make up the prayers.”

So: prayers missed during menses are not made up; Ramaḍān fasts missed are made up later.

    Part 7 · Menses and post-natal bleeding

    Other rulings

    When it ends

She makes ghusl and prays the prayer whose time she is in — she does not wait for the next prayer.

    Irregular bleeding

Bleeding outside the normal period is not menses. She washes, makes wuḍūʾ for each prayer, and prays and fasts normally.

    The Ḥanafī view
    • Menses lasts at least 3 days and at most 10 days. Bleeding shorter or longer than that is treated as استحاضة.
    • Post-natal bleeding (النفاس) lasts at most 40 days. If it stops earlier, she makes ghusl and prays.

Other schools set different limits — for example, the Shāfiʿīs allow up to 15 days for menses and 60 days for nifās.

Most contemporary scholars say a phone or tablet screen is not a Muṣḥaf, so touching it is not touching the Muṣḥaf. But someone who needs ghusl still may not recite the Qurʾān.

    Verses used as duʿāʾ

Saying a verse with the intention of duʿāʾ or dhikr — like رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً — is allowed in every state.

A woman in menses may not recite the Qurʾān, the same as someone in janābah.

Later Ḥanafī scholars allowed a female teacher in menses to teach the Qurʾān word by word, pausing between the words.

Some Mālikī scholars allow a woman in menses to recite from memory.

    When is it allowed?

    Qurʾān
“…and you find no water, then seek clean earth and wipe your faces and hands with it.”

Tayammum takes the place of both wuḍūʾ and ghusl when:

    No water

None can be found, or not enough.

    Water would harm

A real illness or wound that water would make worse.

    Dangerous cold

Severe cold with no way to warm the water.

    Part 9 · Tayammum

    How to make tayammum

ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir رضي الله عنهما needed ghusl on a journey and found no water, so he rolled in the dust. The Prophet ﷺ taught him:

    Hadith
“It would have been enough for you to do this with your hands” — then he struck the ground once with his hands, wiped the left over the right, the backs of his hands, and his face.
    1. Intend tayammumThe same for minor and major ḥadath.
    2. Strike clean earth with both palms
    3. Wipe the face, then the handsBroken by whatever breaks wuḍūʾ — and by finding water.
    Part 9 · Tayammum

    The Hanafi view

    The Ḥanafī view

Tayammum is done with two strikes on the earth:

    1. The first strike — wipe the face.
    2. The second strike — wipe the arms up to and including the elbows, like the arms in wuḍūʾ.

The Shāfiʿīs agree with this. The Ḥanbalīs follow the hadith of ʿAmmār: one strike, for the face and the hands.
